THE TIME IS NOW / EL TIEMPO HA LLEGADO

Friends,

We are currently in the process of seeking contacts in order to launch the humanist projects decribed in previous posts. These projects will take place in areas near the border between Mexico and the United States. The goal here is to connect all kinds of progressive human beings that share in the ideals of the Humanist Movement so that real structural change can be made, and then used as an example for future projects. There is no time to waste in a world filled with violence and human suffering. Interested parties and individuals worldwide can contact me directly via email with any comments, questions, or ideas. Real change will not occur unless we, the human beings, seek this change.

La meta aquí es conectar todos tipos de seres humanos progresivos que compartan en los ideales del Movimiento Humanista para poder realizer verdaderos cambios estructurales, y utilizar esto como ejemplo para proyectos en el futuro. No hay tiempo de perder en un mundo lleno de la violencia y el sufrimiento humano. THE PROJECT / EL PROYECTO

Note: It would be useful to read the two previous posts before reading this one.

It has been made quite obvious that many people, specifically young people, agree with the ideals and the mission of the Humanist Movement (read previous posts). Naturally then, questions have been asked to the tune of “What do we do now?”, “How can I participate?”, and the like. With much to be done in the world today, I now present you, the progressive human being, with something we can do in the form of a Humanist Movement project. This project is by no means set in stone; it is simply an idea that will hopefully expand as humans just like you and I begin to see the potential for change that something like this contains. It must be stated, however, that in order to maintain ideological independence, the Humanist Movement does not accept monetary support from exterior sources. Everything is created voluntarily by the human being and for the human being so that the movement can grow independently, making profound changes along the way.

On to the project: A socio-economic phenomenon is currently taking place and has been for sometime. The richest country in the world in economic terms presently shares the largest border of any 1st world nation with that of an underdeveloped nation. It is here, between Mexico and the United States, that the great dichotomy can be seen between rich and poor, between the “privileged” and the “underprivileged”. While one side faces the horrors of extreme poverty, the other experiences increasing amounts of violence, depression, and drug addiction. Something is obviously wrong here, and it is due to these factors that I believe this would be a perfect point of interest to launch projects based on the ideology of the Humanist Movement.

These projects can and should take a multitude of forms. Drawing from the inspiration of what other Humanist activists have done and are currently doing all over the world, projects will center on things such as health, education, community development, and local politics. Campaigns will be launched in these arenas focusing in on human development, and at the same time maintaining the underlying theme of humanizing the earth in a non-violent manner. In this effort, there will be no borders, no “Mexicans”, no “Americans”, just human beings working to improve the human endeavor on a purely voluntary basis. As the Humanist message spreads and as projects expand, it is expected that a certain kind of demonstration effect will occur. This demonstration effect will show to the world that it does not matter what nationality, race, or religion one claims. We can all, as human beings, work together to rid the world of violence, discrimination, and human suffering.

With this said, what needs to be done now is an accumulation of human forces. University students, community activists, and human beings in general who share in the task of humanizing the world, must get together. From Los Angeles and Tijuana to El Paso and Jaurez, something must be done and it all starts with us. With more people, more ideas can be shared and more projects created. Once united, change will take place and expand. This, my friends, is the revolution of the new millennium. I ask you once again to consider the revolutionary task placed before you.

Se ha hecho absolutamente obvio que mucha gente, específicamente gente joven, convenga con los ideales y la misión del Movimiento Humanista (se refiere a postes anteriores). Naturalmente entonces, personas han puesta preguntas como "¿Qué hacemos ahora?”, ¿"Cómo puedo participar?”, y otras similares. Con mucho trabajo que hacer en el mundo de hoy, ahora les presento, a los seres humanos progresistas, algo que podemos hacer en la forma de un proyecto humanista. Este proyecto no esta, de ninguna manera, totalmente confirmado y completo; es simplemente una idea que esperanzadamente se ampliará cuando seres humanos como ustedes y yo comienzan a ver el potencial de cambio que algo como esto contiene. Sin embargo, se debe clarificar que para mantener la independencia ideológica, el Movimiento Humanista no acepta ayuda monetaria de fuentes exteriores. Se crea todo voluntariamente por el ser humano y para el humano, y en esta manera el movimiento crece independientemente mientras tanto realizando cambios profundos.

Siguimos con el proyecto: Un fenómeno socioeconómico está ocurriendo actualmente y esto ha estado pasando por mucho tiempo. El país más rico del mundo en términos económicos comparte, actualmente, la frontera más grande de cualquier nación del primer mundo con una nación subdesarrollada. Está aquí, entre México y los Estados Unidos, donde se puede ver la gran dicotomía entre ricos y pobres, entre “los privilegiós" y “los desvalidos". Mientras que un lado experimenta los horrores de la pobreza extrema, el otro lado experimenta aumentando cantidades de violencia, depresión, y el uso de drogas. Algo está obviamente mal aquí, y es debido a estos factores que creo que éste lugar sería un punto perfecto para lanzar proyectos basados en la ideología del Movimiento Humanista.

Estos proyectos deben tomar una multiplicidad de formas. Utlizando la inspiración de lo que otros activistas humanistas han hecho y están haciendo actualmente por todo el mundo, los proyectos se concentrarán en temas como la salud, la educación, el desarrollo de la comunidad, y la política local. Las campañas serán lanzadas en estas arenas que se centran en el desarrollo del ser humano, pero al mismo tiempo mantendrán el objetivo de humanizar la tierra en una manera no-violenta. En este gran esfuerzo, no habrá “fronteras”, y no habrán "mexicanos" o "americanos"; solo habrán seres humanos que trabajan para mejorar las condiciones del humano en una manera puramente voluntaria. Mientras que el mensaje humanista se difunde y mientras que los proyectos se amplían, se espera que ocurrirá un cierto tipo de efecto de demostración. Este efecto de demostración demostrará al mundo que no nos importa qué nacionalidad, raza, o religión uno tiene, y que nosotros podemos, como seres humanos, trabajar juntos para librar el mundo de la violencia, la discriminación, y el sufrimiento humano.

Con todo eso dicho, lo qué se necesita hacer ahora es acumular la fuerza del ser humano. Estudiantes universitarios, activistas de la comunidad, y seres humanos en general que comparten la idea de humanizar el mundo, deben unirse. Desde Los Ángeles y Tijuana hasta El Paso y Jaurez, hay que hacer algo y todo comienza con nosotros. Con más gente, más ideas pueden ser compartidas y más proyectos creados. Cuando estamos unidos, un gran cambio ocurrirá y se ampliará. Esto, mis queridos amigos, es la revolución del nuevo milenio. Pido que ustedes de nuevo consideren la tarea revolucionaria puesta antes de ustedes.

THE HUMANIST MOVEMENT TODAY / EL MOVIMIENTO HUMANISTA HOY

Some questions have been posed about what the Humanist Movement is currently doing in the world today. To begin, the movement at present has over 900,000 active participants, and over 3,000,000 sympathizers who also participate in a broad range of activities that take place in over 100 countries worldwide. These participants and sympathizers come from multiple ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs, yet share a common purpose, a common goal, that of humanizing the world.

What makes this movement distinct from other social actions is the fact that it seeks revolutionary change in personal, social, and political spheres. At the core of this social revolution, is the ideal that real systematic change cannot take place unless people themselves change to acknowledge the human being as the central value in this world thus rejecting all forms of violence and discrimination. If this internal change occurs, external change in social and political arenas will surely occur correspondingly. In this sense, the Humanist Movement expands without the need for any support from the exterior. All aspects of the movement are generated internally and expressed externally solely with the force and strength of the human being.

In the face of so much human suffering in the contemporary world, many other positions and other organizations exist today that encourage people to unselfishly help the dispossessed and those who suffer from discrimination. Associations, volunteer groups, and large numbers of individuals are on occasion moved to make positive contributions. Without doubt, one of their contributions is to generate condemnations of these wrongs. However, such groups do not focus their actions on transforming the underlying structures and systems that give rise to the problems. Their approaches are more closely related to humanitarianism than to that of the Humanist Movement, although among these efforts are many conscientious protests and actions that can be extended and deepened.

With this distinction made, the task of ridding the world of violence, discrimination, and human suffering is currently happening by means of the Humanist Movement. Volunteers all over the world are working towards humanizing the world in the three arenas mentioned above: personal, social, & political. With the intention of becoming an even more broad-based social movement, the vital force of the Humanist Movement is organizing action fronts in the workplace, neighborhoods, unions, and among social action, political, environmental, and cultural organizations. Such collective action makes it possible for varied progressive forces, groups, and individuals to have greater presence and influence, without losing their own identities or special characteristics. The objective of this movement is to promote a union of forces increasingly able to influence broad strata of the population, orienting social transformation.

Since its beginnings in 1969, the Humanist Movement has been growing and continues to grow as humans begin to realize what needs to be done in order to solve the problems of this world. Again, I ask you to consider the task of humanizing the unjust world in which we live.

Se han planteado algunas preguntas sobre lo que el Movimiento Humanista esta haciendo actualmente en el mundo de hoy. Para empezar, el movimiento tiene más que 900.000 participantes activos, y más que 3.000.000 adherentes que también participen en un espectro de actividades que ocurren en más que 100 países por todo el mundo. Estos participantes y adherentes vienen de diferentes etnias y creencias religiosas, pero al mismo tiempo comparten una meta común, la de la humanización del mundo.

Lo que hace el Movimiento Humanista distinto de otros movimientos sociales es el hecho que este movimiento busca un cambio revolucionario en esferas personales, sociales, y políticas. En la base de esta revolución social, existe el ideal que un verdadero cambio sistemático no puede ocurrir si la gente no cambie internamente para reconocer el ser humano como valor central del mundo, así que rechazando todas las formas de violencia y discriminación. Si ocurre este cambio interno, un cambio externo en las arenas sociales y políticas seguramente ocurrirá correspondientemente. En este sentido, el Movimiento Humanista se amplía sin la necesidad de apoyo del exterior. Todos los aspectos del movimiento se generan internamente y se expresan externamente con solamente la fuerza del ser humano.

En un mundo lleno de sufrimiento, son numerosas las posturas que, teniendo por base el hecho del sufrimiento humano, invitan a la acción desinteresada a favor de los desposeídos o los discriminados. Asociaciones, grupos voluntarios y sectores importantes de la población se movilizan, en ocasiones, haciendo su aporte positivo. Sin duda que una de sus contribuciones consiste en generar denuncias sobre esos problemas. Sin embargo, tales grupos no plantean su acción en términos de transformación de las estructuras que dan lugar a esos males. Estas posturas se inscriben en el humanitarismo más que en lo que hace el Movimiento Humanista. En ellas se encuentran ya protestas y acciones puntuales susceptibles de ser profundizadas y extendidas.

Con la calarificación de esta distinción, la tarea de librar el mundo de la violencia, la discriminación, y el sufrimiento humano está sucediendo actualmente por medio del Movimiento Humanista. Voluntarios por todos lados del mundo estan trabajando hacia la humanización del mundo en las tres áreas mencionadas arriba: lo personal, lo social, y la político. Con la intención de convertirse en una gran fuerza social, el Movimiento Humanista organiza frentes de acción en el campo laboral, habitacional, gremial, político y cultural con la intención de ir asumiendo el carácter de movimiento social. Al proceder así, crea condiciones de inserción para las diferentes fuerzas, grupos e individuos progresistas sin que éstos pierdan su identidad ni sus características particulares. El objetivo de tal movimiento consiste en promover la unión de fuerzas capaces de influir crecientemente sobre vastas capas de la población, orientando con su acción la transformación social.

Desde sus principios en 1969, el Movimiento Humanista ha estado creciendo y continúa creciendo mientras que los seres humanos comienzan a darse cuenta de lo que se tiene que suceder para solucionar los problemas del mundo. Otra vez, pido que ustedes considerían la tarea de la humanización de este mundo injusto donde vivimos.

REAL CHANGE? / ¿UN CAMBIO REAL?

Dear Friends,

I write to tell you nothing more than the obvious. Something is truly wrong with the world in which we live, and I’m sure most of you acknowledge this situation. As one half of the world struggles through dire conditions of poverty, the other half engages in warfare and multiple forms of violence that seek nothing more than the attainment of wealth and power. In a world faced with such horrors and tribulations, where do we find the human being? Instead of a world where the human being is considered the central value, we witness a world where money and power have taken center stage. With a value system such as this, the many forms of violence we see today are sure to persist. This violence isn’t only physical violence, which is expressed in ways such as warfare. There is also economic violence, racial violence, and psychological violence, each of which being expressed in an equally repugnant manner. This, of course, is all obvious to you.

I also write to tell you that there is something we can do, as human beings, to change the violence that surrounds us. To be brief, the current value system that encompasses greed, power, and money, must be changed to encompass nothing more than the human being. A world where the human being is considered to be the central value will eliminate human suffering, and with it the many forms of violence mentioned above. Such a task, the task of humanizing the earth, will not be an easy one; yet it is necessary for the sake of mankind, and generations to come. I ask you to consider this revolutionary task placed before you.

Queridos Amigos,

Escribo para decirles nada más que lo obvio. Algo anda mal con el mundo en cual vivimos, y estoy seguro que ustedes reconozcan esta situación. Mientras que una mitad del mundo lucha con condiciones calamitosas de la pobreza, la otra mitad se involucra con guerras y las formas múltiples de violencia que no buscan nada más que el dinero y el poder. ¿En un mundo que tiene tales horrores y pequeñeces, dónde encontramos el ser humano? En vez de un mundo donde se considera el ser humano como valor central, somos testigos de un mundo donde el dinero y el poder han tomado la posicion de valor central. Con un sistema de valores como esto, las muchas formas de violencia que podemos ver seguramente persistirán. Esta violencia no es solamente la violencia física que se expresa en maneras como la guerra. Existe también la violencia económica, la violencia racial, y la violencia psicologica, cada uno de las cuales siendo expresado en una manera igualmente repugnante. Todo esto, por supuesto, es obvio.

Escribo para decirles también que hay algo que nosotros podemos hacer, como seres humanos, para cambiar la violencia que nos rodea. El sistema actual de valores que favorece la avaricia, el poder, y el dinero, se debe cambiar para que rodee nada más que el ser humano. Un mundo donde se considera el ser humano como valor central eliminará el sufrimiento humano y las muchas formas de violencia mencionadas arriba. Tal tarea, la tarea de humanizar la tierra, no será fácil; sin embargo, es necesario para el futuro de la humanidad, y para las generaciones que vienen. Pido que ustedes considerarían esta tarea revolucionaria puesta antes de ustedes.
